Collaborating introduction

What work would I like to expand upon in this unit?

The work I’m interested is immersive media, I’ve been to some events all round the world and the visuals that are played raining through projectors really interest me. The colours and patterns that add to the whole ambience of the music or set that you’re listening to draws me in. I have been studying sound for screen for the later part of my second year experience, the motion in my films are to evoke a feeling through image. However, I want to explore how moving image can effect you when you don’t recognise the image like in projection.

Joanie Lemercier

Joanie Lemercier is a group member of AntiVJ who are a group that work with projected light and visual patterns. They talk about how they came from the DJ and club scene, which is where I found a lot of my interest in the visual art forms. They just talk about how they expanded their business but their inspiration coming from a club and DJ scene is common as they always seem to be prevalent there. Joanie talks about the freedom that projector visual art can bring to those who create it and view it, the scale on which some of their art work

AntiVJ

AntiVJ is a visual label that I found through the internet. They are based in Belgium and are focused on the audio visual art form especially through projectors. “ANTIVJ is a visual label initiated by European-based artists whose work is focused on the use of projected light and its influence on our perception. Clearly stepping away from standard setups & techniques, Antivj artists create immersive installations and live performances that challenge the audience’s senses. Antivj was originally created by Yannick Jacquet, Joanie Lemercier, Olivier Ratsi and Romain Tardy around 2006. Thomas Vaquié has been composing music for most projects since 2008, with visual artist/creative coder Simon Geilfus joining in in 2009. The label was co-directed by Joanie Lemercier and Nicolas Boritch until 2010, and is since then being managed by Nicolas Boritch.”

Rather than following standard projection setups, they create immersive installations and live performances that challenge the audience’s senses. The collective was founded around 2006 by Yannick Jacquet, Joanie Lemercier, Olivier Ratsi, and Romain Tardy, with later collaborations expanding their sound and visual language. Their work sits between architecture, music, light, and code — dissolving the lines between disciplines.

What I want to do with my work

The work I’m interested in is immersive media. I’ve been to events all around the world where visuals are projected through rain, haze, and smoke, cascading across walls and bodies. Those moments stay with me. The colours and patterns don’t just decorate the space — they transform it. They shape the atmosphere of the music or set you’re listening to, pulling you deeper into the experience. I’m fascinated by how projected light can become something almost physical, something you feel as much as you see.

I’m thinking about reaching out to someone thats in immersive media, I know someone that is in the immersive media that I might reach out. He too has an interest in rave culture and immersive media as we have both worked on DJ sets which is a good start to working with someone with similar passions.
